WIS 83 project - environmental documents

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is the decision document for a highway project like the WIS 83 project. The EIS pulls together community and agency interests and recommends a future course of action.

An EIS is required by the National and Wisconsin Environmental Policy Acts for projects with potentially significant social, economic, natural resource and other impacts.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is the lead agency for the EIS, which was prepared in accordance with FHWA's guidelines.

  • The Draft EIS was the first version of the EIS.
  • A public hearing was held after the Draft EIS became available for public and agency review.
  • The Final EIS was compiled after the Draft EIS was circulated and comments gathered. The Final EIS documents the preferred alternative, basis for its selection, comments on the Draft EIS and public hearing input.

The preferred alternative has been identified, and the corridor study will conclude with a set of concept plans showing the location and dimensions for the proposed improvements. The plans will be provided to local officials for use in land use planning and preserving the land needed to build the improvements.
