US 45 expansion project

US 45 (old WIS 110) is a major north-south route through east central Wisconsin and Winnebago County. The US 45 expansion project will develop this route into a four-lane, divided expressway with at-grade intersections and restricted private access. The facility is being upgraded to serve existing and projected traffic volumes, and improve both safety and operational efficiency.

This expansion project begins at Winnebago County G and extends 4.6 miles north to County II. This project will convert the existing two-lane expressway into a four-lane expressway by adding two additional lanes to the east of US 45.

Nearly a mile of the existing lanes near Breezewood Lane and Woodland Drive will be reconstructed to improve sight distance. Right of way will be purchased for future frontage roads and overpass bridges, but they will not be constructed as part of this project.

Five median crossovers are planned within the limits of the US 45 project to allow local residents safer and more convenient access between intersections. These crossovers are specifically designed for turning movements and WisDOT will not place signs prohibiting turns at the crossovers.

Crossover locations will be located a minimum of 2,000 feet apart to maintain safety and better traffic flow on the highway. Wisconsin State Statute 346.33 explains how it is legal to use median crossovers for turns when no signs are posted.

This expansion project is part of the larger US 45 corridor plan that follows old WIS 110 from US 41 to Winchester and old Winnebago County W and Outagamie County D to New London. It is part of both the state's Corridors 2030 Plan as a backbone route and the National Highway System.
