WIS 23 expansion study

WIS 23 is an important east-west route through the state of Wisconsin. It is classified as a Corridor 2020 connector highway, which means it has been designated as a highly important state roadway. In 1999, WIS 23 was selected by the state Legislature to receive funding for improvements.

As WIS 23 travels through Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties it needs to serve two distinct user groups. WIS 23 is expected to carry motorists passing through the area and also act as a local route for residents of the area surrounding WIS 23.

The WIS 23 expansion project objective is to add capacity and increase safety by expanding the existing 2-lane highway to a 4-lane expressway from the east side of the city of Fond du Lac to the city of Plymouth. No bypasses will be necessary along the route.

The WIS 23 expansion project is still in the planning stages of development. WisDOT has prepared a draft, which outlines the purpose and need for improvement, possible construction alternatives and their respective environmental consequences, and the comments collected thus far from residents and agency officials.

The draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was made available in fall 2004, followed by a public hearing.  The existing corridor (Alternative 1) was selected in January 2005.  Construction is currently slated to begin in 2013.

A public information meeting has been scheduled for July 20, 2006.
