US 51/WIS 29 project - traffic impacts

Motorists can expect the following traffic impacts:

  • Short-term lane closures of US 51/WIS 29 during off-peak travel times (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.).
  • Some overnight freeway and local road closures to facilitate bridge work.
  • Periodic ramp closures and detours.

If a temporary road closure is required during construction, alternate access will be provided.

Marathon County NN to the US 51/Bridge Street interchange

Schedule: July 2008 to September 2010
Cost: $25.6 million
Description: Crews are reconstructing and widening US 51/WIS 29. Related work includes: construction of new high-speed ramps; upgrades to the WIS 52 interchange; and improvements to Stewart Avenue and 28th Avenue.
Traffic impact:

  • 28th Avenue - between WIS 52 and Sherman Street - is reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Stewart Avenue - between 24th and 26th Avenue - is reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Southbound US 51/WIS 29 – between County NN and County N -- will be reduced to two lanes from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct.30, and on Monday, Nov. 2.

WisDOT encourages local motorists, who normally travel the US 51/WIS 29 corridor for short trips, to consider using alternate routes whenever possible. Carpooling to work and planning off-peak travel times will also help to avoid traffic delays and maintain traffic flow.
