I-90 corridor roadside facilities study need

The existing roadside facilities were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, and in some cases no longer meet the needs of the traveling public and commercial trucking industry.

At the La Crosse travel information center on French Island, the size of the truck parking stalls, the layout of the truck parking area and the design of the access roads no longer efficiently serve large semi trucks. In addition, the close spacing to the County B interchange creates potential conflicts between slower moving traffic entering I-90 and faster moving traffic exiting I-90.

The weigh station near West Salem weighs only one set of truck axles at a time on a static platform scale. This slow method of weighing trucks results in lengthy delays to truckers. Occasionally, the delays cause the queue of waiting trucks to back up onto I-90.

Modern weigh stations, such as the recently constructed Kenosha facility, incorporate the use of "weigh-in-motion" technology to reduce the time it takes to weigh trucks. Modern facilities also have indoor inspection of trucks.

Key study activities will include:

  • Data gathering.
  • Alternatives development.
  • Environmental analysis.
  • Agency coordination.
  • Community involvement.

Results of initial data gathering include:

  • Corridor traffic volumes PDF (264 KB)
Traffic counts show current and projected average daily traffic volumes.
  • Corridor truck traffic generators PDF (107 KB)
This diagram shows the extent to which local employers generate truck traffic. The larger the dot means more trucks are generated from that area.
  • Observed parking occupancy PDF (89 KB)
Parking studies at I-90 rest areas and travel information centers were performed for two weeks in fall 2004. Truck parking was recorded each day while passenger car parking was recorded only from Sunday to Tuesday.
  • Truck traffic characteristics PDF (693 KB)
Origin-Destination studies revealed intended destinations of trucks traveling on the I-90 study corridor. The blue line indicates the approximate maximum legal distance a truck could travel in one day from the corridor area.
