Project overview

The Zoo Interchange provides connections between I-94, I-894 and US 45 in western Milwaukee County near the Milwaukee County Zoo. Built in 1963, it is the busiest interchange in Wisconsin with more than 350,000 vehicles using it daily.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has been closely monitoring the aging Zoo Interchange structures. Thorough bridge investigations were conducted from August through November 2009 and the results have prompted WisDOT to move forward immediately with plans to rebuild the following three structures in the interchange:

  • Northbound I-894/US 45 through the interchange to north US 45
  • Southbound US 45 to the eastbound I-94 connector ramp
  • Northbound I-894/US 45 to the westbound I-94 ramp

The Zoo Interchange is currently being studied to determine how to best meet the transportation needs of this heavily traveled interchange into the future. The work done to replace the three bridges will not interfere with the Zoo Interchange Study. WisDOT will continue working towards a preferred alternative and a Final Environmental Impact Statement.
