US 12/14 West Beltline Modifications (University Ave.-Mineral Pt. Rd.) - Project details

Terrace Ave. to Greenway Blvd.

  • Widening the outside shoulders of both the eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • The median shoulders will be widened to accommodate construction staging and a median barrier.
  • New pavement will be installed on the eastbound and westbound travel lanes
  • Mainline roadway profile will be raised in both directions.
  • Eastbound and westbound Greenway Blvd. exit ramps will be modified to better blend with mainline travel lanes.

  • An additional right turn lane on the eastbound exit ramp will be added at the Greenway Blvd. interchange.
  • Right-of-way acquisition will be required to accommodate the improvements.
  • Wetlands are located in the northwest quadrant of Greenway Blvd. interchange. A delineation will be completed to determine the extent, if any, of the potential project impacts.

Greenway Blvd. to Old Sauk Rd.

  • Widening the outside shoulders in both mainline directions.
  • Median shoulders will be widened to accommodate construction staging and a median barrier.
  • Mainline roadway profile will be raised in both directions
  • New pavement in the eastbound and westbound travel lanes will be installed.
  • Westbound Greenway Blvd. and eastbound Old Sauk Rd. parallel exit ramps will be extended.

  • Right turn lane on the westbound Greenway Blvd. exit ramp will be lengthened.
  • Similarly, the ramps for eastbound Greenway Blvd. and westbound Old Sauk Rd. parallel entrance ramps will be extended.
  • Eastbound and westbound Greenway Blvd. and Old Sauk Rd. exit ramps will be modified to better blend with mainline travel lanes.
  • Traffic signal equipment at the exit ramp terminals will be relocated.

Old Sauk Rd. to Mineral Point Rd.

  • Adding auxiliary lanes along the outside of the existing eastbound and westbound travel lanes.
  • Mainline roadway profile will be raised in both directions.
  • New pavement in the eastbound and westbound travel lanes (south of Old Sauk Rd. interchange heading north) will be installed.
  • The outside shoulders next to auxiliary lanes in both directions will also be widened.
  • A concrete barrier along outside shoulders will be installed to avoid the need for additional right-of-way acquisition.

  • A median barrier will be constructed.
  • Entrance ramp for eastbound Old Sauk Rd. will be widened to accommodate two lanes of queuing, and ramp metering will be installed.
  • Four sign structures, two in the eastbound and two in the westbound direction, will be installed.
  • The addition of the auxiliary lanes will require the completion of a noise analysis to determine if there are potential impacts to adjacent properties.

Mineral Point Rd. to Gammon Rd.

  • Entrance ramp for eastbound Mineral Point Rd. will be widened to accommodate two lanes of queuing, and ramp metering will be installed.
  • Beam guard will be installed along this section
  • Retaining wall may be installed to prevent the need for right-of-way acquisition.

Other Improvements

  • Grading and slope improvements to accommodate roadway widening and drainage throughout entire project (median and outside) will occur.
  • Culverts will be replaced as needed along the corridor.
  • Two ground-mounted dynamic-message signs will be installed beside the travel lanes north of Old Sauk Rd. and north of University Ave.
  • A crash investigation pad and law enforcement pad will be constructed near Old Sauk Rd. to provide incident management.
  • Esser Pond is located adjacent to the northwest quadrant of the Greenway Blvd. interchange. Although strip acquisition of right-of-way may be required at this location, the grading limits are not expected to extend beyond the existing fence line, which coincides with the existing right-of-way.
