US 10 expansion project schedule

The proposed construction schedule begins in 2006 with completion currently scheduled for 2012. Current construction updates can be found in the North Central Region weekly construction update.

Current construction

Project: US 10 Wisconsin River Crossing, County E to Pinewood Drive
Dates: September 2006 through September 2008
Description: A new bridge across the Wisconsin River will be built north of Stevens Point.
Traffic impacts:

  • There will be no impact to traffic on the state highway system.
  • Local access on River Road may be closed at times to accommodate construction activities.

Project: I-39/US 10 west interchange
Dates: August 2007 through summer 2009
Description: A new interchange will be constructed near the current Portage County X interchange to provide high speed free-flow traffic access from I-39 to the new US 10 west bypass.
Traffic impacts:

  • I-39 traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction at times.
  • The existing County X interchange will be permanently closed in July 2008.
  • County X will remain as an overpass over I-39 after the project is completed.
  • Local access is available at the newly constructed Casmir Road interchange.
  • County X/Sawmill Road overpass will be closed in July 2008 to facilitate bridge deck repairs on the structure. County X deck repairs are scheduled for completion by November 2008. The overpass will be reopened to traffic at that time.
  • Once the new US 10 alignment is completed in 2008, Pinewood Drive will not have access to the new highway. Local access across new US 10 is provided by the newly constructed underpass of Scenic Drive.
  • Spring 2009 construction activities will be limited to concrete paving of the new highway.
  • Upon completion of the project in July 2009, US 10 traffic will use the newly constructed roadway from I-39 to the east intersection of WIS 34 and existing US 10.

Project: US 10, Long Road to River Road
Dates: September 2007 through summer 2009
Description: Construction of a new four-lane freeway from Long Road to River Road. The project also includes a Portage County E overpass and a new interchange with WIS 34 north.
Traffic impacts:

  • WIS 34 north and County E will remain open during the majority of the construction.
  • County E will be closed to traffic for short durations in summer 2008 to facilitate construction of the new US 10 bridge over County E.
  • Once the new US 10 alignment is completed, Maple Road and Marsh Road will not have access to the new highway.
  • WIS 34 will be reconstructed in stages to allow for through traffic. Crews anticipated closing WIS 34 for approximately 20 minutes under nighttime operations to facilitate the installation of beams on the new US 10 beams.
  • Spring 2009 construction activities will be limited to concrete paving of the new highway.
  • Upon completion of the project in July 2009, US 10 traffic will use the newly constructed roadway from I-39 to the east intersection of WIS 34 and existing US 10.

Project: US 10, Wood County N to Long Road
Dates: August 2009 through fall 2011
Description: Construction of a new four-lane freeway from Wood County N to Long Road. The project also includes overpasses at Portage County G and Portage County O and a new interchange with WIS 34 south.
Traffic impacts:

  • County G will remain open during the majority of construction except for short periods during off-peak travel times for certain construction activities.
  • County O will be closed for construction of an overpass for a period of three to four months.
  • Local road crossings of new US 10 at Long Road, Mallek Road, Clover Road, and Trestik Road will be closed.
  • There will be minor disruptions in the local road system adjacent to the project while local road modifications are constructed.
  • After construction of new US 10 is completed, it will be opened to traffic from Trestik Road to WIS 34 south. At this time, the intersection of US 10 and WIS 34 south will be closed, and the WIS 34 south interchange will be constructed. This closure will require WIS 34 to be detoured for four to six months.
