US 14/61 improvements, Segment 1 - Four-lane divided highway between Westby and Viroqua

The four-lane divided highway section will begin south of Westby near Tristate Road and travel southerly 3.5 miles to Springville Road.

The existing roadway will become the new westbound US 14 (northbound US 61), and the new roadway will become the eastbound US 14 (southbound US 61).

The new roadbed will be constructed to the west of the existing roadway. Construction will include two 12-foot driving lanes, 6-foot inside shoulder, 10-foot outside shoulder and a 60-foot median.

Traffic will remain on the existing roadway while the new eastbound roadway is constructed. Once the new eastbound lanes are completed, traffic will be shifted to the new roadway while the existing roadbed is reconstructed.

Construction of the four-lane section is estimated to start in 2010, with real estate acquisition beginning in 2008.

Access onto the proposed US 14/61 four-lane roadway will be maintained at public roads and existing driveways. To improve safety, some driveways were combined or connected to adjacent public roads.

Access at public roads will be located at the following intersections:

  • Sherpe Road
  • Smith Road
  • 3 Chimney Road
  • County Y
  • Springville Road

Additional median crossings will be constructed to provide better access for properties located adjacent to the roadway.

The estimated total cost for this section will be $15 million.
