US 18 Bluemound Road project - need

US 18 (Bluemound Road) carries traffic through a very highly developed business corridor in the city of Brookfield. It is a heavily traveled roadway with one of the highest crash rates in the state. Approximately 1.5 crashes occur per day along Bluemound Road.

The purpose of this project is to develop alternatives that will eliminate hazards and improve safety. Improved access, driveway separation and medians will lower the potential for crashes and will improve the roadway carrying capacity and travel times for shoppers and commuters.

WisDOT is utilizing Access Management (AM) to help reduce the number of crashes along this 3-mile corridor from Barker Road to Moorland Road. AM is a process in which design, location and operation of driveways, median openings, interchanges, and street connections are taken into consideration when evaluating how consumers access businesses in a safe manner while protecting the safety and efficiency of the road system.

More detailed information on AM is available through the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration Web site.

Below is information (reports/video files/Web sites) made available by others that discusses the benefits of AM and the results of several projects throughout the United States:
