US 18 corridor study

US 18 serves as a major east-west arterial route through southern Wisconsin connecting the city of Milwaukee to the city of Prairie du Chien. US 18 is classified as a backbone route or a connecting route in the WisDOT Corridors 2020 plan, depending on its location in the state.

In the project study area, US 18 is classified as a connector route. In the city of Dodgeville, US 18 is a major east-west arterial route passing through the northern portion of the city.

The purpose of the US 18 corridor study was to develop a long-term corridor access plan that would preserve its safety, function and mobility. The study included analysis and recommendations related to:

  • Local circulation and roadway functional class.
  • Access management opportunities.
  • Multi-modal facilities.
  • Transportation implications of local land use changes.

Particular attention was given to the intersection of US 18 and Bennett Road, which has been the site of several fatalities in recent years. A range of alternatives was developed to address safety and operational concerns at this location. These alternatives were brought to the public for review and comment.

The city of Dodgeville has offered a formal position in favor of the roundabout alternative. WisDOT is proceeding with plans to conduct an environmental assessment for this alternative.
