US 2/WIS 13 Intersection improvement - need/purpose

The total number of crashes do not represent a high crash rate based on the statewide average, but a concern is that the percentage of injury and fatality rates is high. About 59 percent of the crashes are due to the right-angle crashes at westbound US 2 and WIS 13. This project is needed to reduce crash severity.

Whether WisDOT decides to use signals or create a roundabout, each project will cause a significant decrease in injury and fatality rate crashes.

Signals would provide gaps in traffic for all movements, reduce severity of total collisions, reduce traffic speeds at the intersection, and eliminate a conflict point. However, whenever signals are installed there is the potential for an increase in the number of rear-end collisions.

A roundabout is expected to reduce the speed of vehicles traveling through the intersection resulting in less severe collisions. A roundabout also eliminates right-angle collision points that occur with the current roadway design.

This project will make it safer and easier for citizens to get to their destinations.
