US 41 expansion, Brown County - need/purpose

The purpose of this project is to upgrade the US 41 corridor and its interchanges to meet existing and future traffic demands and safety issues.

Increasing traffic demand

US 41 is a major transportation route serving northeast Wisconsin. The existing roadway was originally designed for rural traffic volumes. In 2005, traffic volumes ranged from 47,700 to 79,700 vehicles per day. Volumes are forecasted to increase to range from 65,000 to 121,700 vehicles per day by the year 2035.

Safety

Crash rates near WIS 172, US 141, and I-43 are above the state averages. Traffic congestion on US 41 adversely affects safety, mobility, and economic development in Green Bay, De Pere, Ashwaubenon, Howard, and the surrounding communities.

Benefits of this project include:

  • Additional capacity to serve existing and projected traffic volumes.
  • Improved safety.
  • Improved operational efficiency.
  • A highway and interchanges that meet current design standards and operational needs.
