US 41 expansion, Winnebago County - interchanges

Seven interchanges will be improved as part of the US 41 expansion project.

WIS 44 interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Upgrading the existing interchange with improved turn lanes on WIS 44 and at ramp ends.
  • Lengthening on-ramps for future ramp metering.
  • Reconstructing the County K (20th Avenue) bridge over US 41, including bicycle/pedestrian accommodations.

9th Avenue interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Reconstructing the interchange to a tight diamond configuration with improved turn lanes on 9th Avenue and at ramp ends.
  • Reconstructing the 9th Avenue bridge over US 41.
  • Slightly relocating the east frontage road (Koeller Street) to accommodate the new northbound on-ramp.
  • Lengthening on-ramps for future ramp metering.
  • Reconstructing the County E bridge (Witzel Avenue) over US 41, including bicycle/pedestrian accommodations.

WIS 21 interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Reconstructing the existing interchange using a tight diamond configuration with roundabouts on WIS 21 and at ramp ends.
  • Reconstructing the interchange so that WIS 21 passes over US 41 (US 41 currently passes over WIS 21), including bicycle/pedestrian accommodations.
  • Shifting US 41 lanes west to accommodate the new roadway location across Lake Butte des Morts.
  • Shifting WIS 21 south to minimize property impacts and environmental impacts to Lake Butte des Morts.

Lake Butte des Morts Causeway

Improvements include: 

  • Widening the existing causeway to the west.
  • Providing three through lanes and an auxiliary lane in each direction (to address problems with blowing/drifting snow and make it possible to keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction during construction). 
  • Providing bicycle/pedestrian trail across Lake Butte des Morts just east of the northbound lanes.  Two fishing paths to Lake Butte des Morts will also be provided.

US 45 interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Reconstructing the interchange to provide free-flow movements from northbound US 41 to northbound US 45 and southbound US 45 to southbound US 41.
  • Constructing US 45 to pass over US 41 (US 41 is currently passes over US 45).
  • Roundabouts at US 41/45 southbound exit ramp terminal and US 45/Fernau/Lake Butte des Morts Drive.
  • Lengthening on-ramps for future ramp metering.
  • Shifting US 41 west to avoid electric substation.
  • Constructing a new bridge over US 41 to connect the Wiouwash Trail east of US 41 to Lake Butte des Morts Drive.
  • Constructing a new bridge over US 41 to connect West Snell Road east of US 41 to Fountain Avenue west of US 41.

WIS 76 interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Upgrading the existing diamond interchange with improved turn lanes on WIS 76 and at the ramp ends.
  • Lengthening on-ramps for future ramp metering.

Breezewood Lane interchange

Improvements include: 

  • Reconstructing the interchange with a tight diamond configuration and improved turn lanes.
  • Reconstructing the existing Breezewood Lane bridge over US 41, including bicycle/pedestrian accommodations.
  • Lengthening on-ramps for future ramp metering.
