WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study, Brown County

Importance | Study update | Alternatives | What's next

The WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The goal of the study is to recommend a preferred crossing location that meets the existing and future needs for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities. The two year study is scheduled to be completed with a recommendation in winter 2009. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in the 2013 - 2014 time frame.

Local and regional importance

The nearest Fox River crossings are in De Pere (10 miles north) and Kaukauna (six and one half miles south). The WIS 96 bridge not only provides an essential connection for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities, but also provides a critical connection to employers, heath care providers and recreational and retail opportunities in other parts of the Fox Valley.

Study update

Since the last public information meeting (PIM), April 9, 2008, the project team has  focused on reducing the number of alternatives based on the ability to address the study goals and area transportation deficiencies, public input, state and federal agencies input, design issues, safety issues, environmental constraints, and other data gathered.

As a result, the number of remaining alternative alignments has been reduced to from 31 to six.

Alternatives remaining

There are currently six alternatives remaining for consideration.

  • Three of the alternatives cross the Fox River south of the existing bridge.
  • Three cross the Fox River north of the existing bridge.
Some of the alternatives involve a grade separation (bridge) at the WIS 96 crossing of Washington Street.

Some of the alternatives involve an at-grade intersection of WIS 96 and Washington Street.

More detailed displays of each of the six remaining alternatives are available at the Wrightstown village hall for viewing.

In an effort to gather input on the six remaining alternatives for use in the continuing alternative screening process, WisDOT has conducted meetings with various local and county organizations, including:

  • Fifth Project Advisory Committee (PAC)
  • Wrightstown Business Alliance
  • Village of Wrightstown, representatives from Brown County Planning, County Rescue, County Sheriff, and Wrightstown School District

What’s next?

After the June 11, 2009 PIM, WisDOT will further reduce the number of alternatives toward selection of a preferred alternative by winter 2009.

Environmental documentation work, agency coordination and preliminary design work will continue through winter 2009.
