Statewide traffic flow map

The statewide traffic flow map (2002) PDF (1.1 MB) depicts traffic volumes on the state highway network by assigning highway segments a color and pattern based on annual average daily traffic (AADT). The AADT is an estimate of the number of vehicles passing a location on an average day of the year. The legend in the upper right corner of the map, and repeated below, shows the color and pattern assigned to each volume range.

Symbol AADT Range
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 0-999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 0-999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 1,000-1,999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 1,000-1,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 2,000-4,999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 2,000-4,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 5,000-9,999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 5,000-9,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 10,000-19,999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 10,000-19,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 20,000-39,9999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 20,000-39,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of 40,000-69,999 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 40,000-69,999 vehicles
Traffic flow map segment indicating an AADT of over 70,000 vehicles passing locations marked with this symbol on an average day 70,000 and over vehicles

The AADTs come from automatic traffic recorders (ATRs) that collect data continuously, and short-term counts of 48 hours. The short-term counts are adjusted by factors derived from the ATR data. The short-term counts are collected over a three year cycle, and the year the count was taken is indicated on the map. The location of the ATRs is also indicated on the map.  The remainder of the map legend is listed below.
