In the event of a major incident along the I-39/90
Beloit-Janesville-Rockford corridor, alternate routes have been
identified to provide travelers with a safe and timely alternative
to avoid traffic delays, while still allowing emergency vehicle
access to the site.
Depending on the location and direction of the closure, portable
changeable message signs will be strategically placed to advise
drivers which route to use. Emergency personnel and signs will
continue to direct travelers along the alternate route and back onto
the interstate beyond the incident.
State and local agencies in both Wisconsin and Illinois worked in
cooperation to identify the most effective alternate routes and
establish incident management procedures that notify appropriate
emergency agencies and temporarily detour traffic.
The Beloit-Janesville-Rockford alternate route corridor involves
I-39/90 from US 14 in Janesville, Wisconsin, to the I-39/90
interchange north of US 20 Business in Rockford, Illinois.
Once an incident has been identified, the appropriate state and
local agencies will be notified and the WisDOT incident management
coordinator will place the message signs at the predetermined
locations to detour travelers. Local media outlets will be notified
of the freeway closure and the alternate route to be used.
